GLA (Gamma linolenic acid), Omega 3 (Alpha linolenic acid) and Omega 6 (linoleic acid) – these essential fatty acids are derived from plant oils and are the most powerful 5-alpha reductase inhibitors known. All three will inhibit Type I and Type II versions of 5-alpha reductase - some other products including hair loss pills like finasteride (Propecia and Proscar) only inhibit Type I even though Type II exists in high concentrations within scalp tissues.
Zinc Sulphate and Azelaic acid (a substance that occurs naturally in wholegrain cereals like rye and barley) are also strong 5 alpha-reductase inhibitors - when combined with Vitamin B6, 90% inhibition of 5 alpha-reductase activity has been obtained.
Saw palmetto extract - this is another 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor (Types I and II). It’s also effective at blocking the formation of DHT.
Procyanidin oligomers (or Proanthocyanidins) can stimulate hair growth.
