Proscar
contains the prescription drug finasteride and is
used for both male pattern baldness and Benign prostatic hyperplasia
(BPH). BPH is an enlargement of the prostate gland in men.
Finasteride will block 5-alpha reductase – this is an enzyme that
converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
DHT is involved in both androgenetic alopecia and BPH. By reducing DHT
levels, finasteride can help slow or stop hair loss, and shrink the
prostate gland.
The amount of finasteride contained in each Proscar tablet is 5mg
(the dose used for treating BPH).
But, in trials, the lowest dose of
finasteride that’s effective for hair loss was found to be just
1mg.
For this reason, Proscar has been FDA approved for BPH but not
as a hair loss pill.
Note – Propecia is another finasteride
product by Merck. It contains 1mg of finasteride and has
been FDA approved for treating androgenetic alopecia.
The only difference between Propecia and Proscar is in the dose of
finasteride they deliver. So, by using a pill splitter, you can save
money by cutting Proscar tablets into four or even five pieces.
Does it really work?
Yes - It has been clinically proven as effective treatment for men with
androgenetic hair loss.
However, you have to keep taking this drug every day to maintain any
benefit you get and, if you stop taking it, you’ll most probably lose
the hair you gained within 12 months of stopping. Results will vary
from person to person, but generally you won’t be
able to grow back all the hair you’ve lost.
Ingredients - what’s in it?
Each pill contains 5mg of the active ingredient finasteride.
How much do you use?
Since the lowest effective dose of finasteride is 1mg, you need to cut
each tablet into quarters (to obtain 1.25mg) or even fifths (giving you
1mg of finasteride). You can buy a pill splitter from any pharmacy to
do this.
Note – it doesn’t matter if you
don’t
split the pills perfectly because, over 4 (or 5) days, you’ll still get
the same dose you’d get even if you could divide them exactly. Subtle
daily variations will make no difference.
Finasteride absorption is best when taken on an empty stomach and with
a glass of grapefruit juice (this helps your bloodsteam take up the
drug).
For men and women?
No, it's for men only.
Any side effects?
Proscar side effects are caused in about 2% of men. These are sexual
side effects and include - a decrease in volume of ejaculation, breast
tenderness/enlargement, etc.
Women who are, or may become, pregnant must not handle these hair loss
pills.
If you decide to buy Proscar, these are the ongoing
costs involved:
US price
(30 x 5mg tablets) - $120 approx.
UK price
(30 x 5mg tablets) - £60 approx.
Note – Since you can cut each 5mg pill
into four, each pack of 30 will last 4 months.
Money back guarantee?
The money back guarantee you can get from Merck (the manufacturer)
concerns benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It will refund the cost of
the drug if it fails to improve symptoms of BPH within 6 months or if
prostatic surgery is needed within 2 years.
