There Are Propecia Side Effects: But Are They Worth The Risk?
Are the Propecia side effects outweighed by its benefits?
Read this page to find out everything you need to know about this hair loss product including costs, money back guarantees, results, etc.
Propecia contains the prescription drug finasteride and is used to treat androgenetic hair loss in men. Finasteride works by blocking 5-alpha reductase. This decreases the concentration of dihidrotestosterone (DHT) in the bloodstream which can help to slow down or even stop hair loss.
Trials conducted by the manufacturer (Merck Pharmaceuticals) found that 1mg per day is the smallest dose of finasteride that’s effective for androgenetic alopecia. So, despite the possible Propecia side effects, this hair loss product was created and approved by the FDA using 1mg of finasteride per tablet.
Note – another brand name for finasteride is Proscar (also by Merck). It’s an FDA approved prescription drug for Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) - an enlargement of the prostate gland. It contains 5mg of finasteride and has not been FDA approved for hair loss. As with the Propecia side effects, since Proscar uses the same the same drug, it too may cause sexual contraindications.
Propecia has been clinically proven for men experiencing hair loss.
In trials, over 83% of men had maintained or increased their hair count after 2 years of daily treatment. It’s also been demonstrated that after 5 years, 42% had no further hair loss and 48% had hair regrowth. After approximately 6 years of taking these drugs, the vast majority of men still maintained their hair counts. The majority of men taking Propecia report that their bald spot is getting smaller, their hair loss is slowing down, and that the appearance of their hair is improving.
This effectiveness of Propecia was demonstrated in men aged 18 to 41 with mild to moderate hair loss at the top and middle front of the head. Propecia has been developed to treat mild to moderate genetic hair loss in these areas of the scalp. There is insufficient evidence that it also works for receding hairlines at the temples.
