A Human Hair Wig has Helped
Thousands to Restore Their
Hair and Confidence

Today, the human hair wig is sophisticated and almost impossible to detect.

But, is it right for you?
This page will help you answer that question.

Keep reading and you'll find out:

1. How modern wigs are made.

2. Cost.

3. Wig washing and hair hygiene.

1. Construction of modern wigs

The base of a human hair wig (or human hairpiece) has either a net or wefted foundation.

Net foundations are made from a mesh cap with hair knotted in by hand. This hair will be either pre-cut or uncut.

Uncut versions obviously require cutting and styling (which is normally done by an in-house hairdresser at the salon where you purchased your wig). This allows you to either keep the hairstyle you used to have, or try something new.

Wefted foundations are machine-made (this usually makes them less expensive than net foundation human hair wigs).
Human hairpiece?...I don't think so!

They consist of a cap made out of wefts (rows) of hair and usually come in a pre-cut style.
These days are long gone…
This type of wig is usually the lightest type to wear. However, on a very windy day, the foundation of the wefts could show through.

If you've still got some hair left, you can use special hair clips that are sown into the wig to keep it in place.

If you have no hair at all, you can use special double sided sticky tape.

The rim of some wigs may use a type of fabric.

But, more advanced human hair wigs (such as Dermalite and Supplex) use a very thin, stretchy and transparent material that will cling to the scalp much better. …modern wigs are undetectable!

Such high-tech foundations and rims allow you to have a parting that looks extremely natural. The disadvantage of such a rim is that this material does not breathe and so gets very sweaty under the wig.

Dermalite wigs are made to measure, have a thinner rim and are hard wearing. They're suitable if you have total hair loss.

Supplex wigs come in 2 sizes, a selection of colours, and are suitable if you have either complete or partial hair loss. They're cheaper than Dermalite wigs but less durable.

2. Cost

A very expensive human hair wig can cost over £1,000 (more than US$1800). The cost of such a wig reflects how realistic it looks, whether the base is made to measure, and from where the hair originated (either Europe or Asia).

Wigs made with European hair are more expensive because the hair is finer and so, might be similar to your own original hair. However, it is also less durable than Asian/Indian hair.

You should also have a second "back-up" human hair wig (perhaps for emergency use), which will obviously add to the expense.

3. Wig washing and hair hygiene

You have to wash human hair wigs carefully, and ideally use a very meticulous procedure - they can easily lose their hair through rough handling, which means that you could get bald patches in your wig too!

Even with a totally bald head, you should still wash your scalp with shampoo. The scalp follicles produce sebum whether or not there's hair any growing. The wig base will absorb sebum and make its hair greasy.

So, by keeping your scalp as clean and grease-free as possible, you won't have to wash your wig as often. You need to wash your wig every 7 or 10 days unless you exercise or play sports regularly.

At the end of each day, a wig will sit on a wig stand until you're ready to use it again. In that sense, wigs offer a temporary solution to hair loss. However, they're much cheaper than other, more permanent options such as hair transplants.

Obviously then, there are many things that must be considered before deciding whether human hair wigs are the right choice for you.
