Five Things That Cause Female
Hair Loss Numbers to Rise!

There are five things that will cause female hair loss to increase - this page explains what they are.

Up to 50% of women suffer significant hair loss by the age of 60. This statistic is already alarming, but it's only going to get worse!

These are the reasons why:

1. More women delay having children until they're much older
2. An increase in stress
3. Poor nutrition
4. The menopause
5. An aging population

1. More Women Delay Having Children Until
They're Much Older

This is an increasing tendency by women, many preferring instead to concentrate on a career first. Unfortunately, this delay can affect the female body's ability to restore its normal hormone balance following the upheaval of pregnancy and childbirth.

Basically, an older body is more likely to have a slower metabolism or inadequate hormone levels than a younger, healthier body. And this problem can be made even worse due to the hormone fluctuations (especially thyroid hormone) caused by a late pregnancy.

Following pregnancy, it may be impossible for the body to find its normal hormonal balance.

During pregnancy, female hormone levels increase, which usually causes the hair to grow extremely well. But, after pregnancy there is a corresponding decrease in female hormone levels. This reduction can then cause female hair loss to start, and temporary or long-term hair loss may result.

It should, however, also be noted that women of any age might experience hair loss following pregnancy. In fact, up to 50% of women suffer hair loss during the post-partum (post-natal) period after childbirth.

2. An Increase in Stress

Increased levels of physical and emotional stress may be experienced by anyone living today's fast paced "24-7" lifestyle.

Physical stress can come from many sources - pollutants within the environment, a junk food diet, perfumes, household products, etc.

All these things are unnatural and can accumulatively upset a body trying to maintain optimal health.

Emotional stress can build up slowly or quickly due to pressure at work, stressful relationships, home life, etc.

Hair loss due to stress
Whatever the type of stress involved, and whatever the cause, stress can seriously disrupt hormone balance, and have a devastating effect on health.

A career-minded woman might especially find juggling work and family commitments difficult to handle year-on-year. And the cumulative damage created by stress can cause female hair loss.

3. Poor Nutrition

As the obesity problem continues to increase in the West, so to do the problems associated with it.

Conditions like diabetes, heart disease and hair loss are all rising due to the typical high fat junk food diet enjoyed by Western societies.

It is interesting to note that a correlation also appears to exist between genetic hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) and the degenerative conditions of insulin resistance (which leads to diabetes) and cardiovascular disease.

Given that "you are what you eat" it's easy to understand how the foods you consume can affect your health.

And the health of your body is reflected in the health of your hair.

If your body becomes ill, your hair is often the first to show it - both the condition of your hair, as well as the quality of hair growth may fade.

As a woman, you are far more likely to try weight loss programmes than a man.

Mmmm, pancakes!
And, in order to comply with a strict weight loss regime, this often means a radical change from your normal day-to-day diet.

What you eat can affect hormone production and balance. And so, depending upon how poor your diet normally is, a rapid weight loss programme might even make your hair loss problem worse.

But, don't get me wrong here, if you normally enjoy a high fat, high sugar diet and need to lose weight, then of course you will benefit from a weight loss programme. However, this doesn't have to be radical - a sensible high fibre diet will not only satisfy your hunger, but also help lower LDL cholesterol.

(The introduction of a Westernised diet and lifestyle to countries such as Japan is also rapidly increasing the incidence of hair loss there too).

4. The Menopause

Following the menopause, the concentration of the female sex hormone oestrogen dramatically decreases. This drop may be large enough to allow testosterone (which can cause female hair loss as well as male baldness) to manifest itself on a woman's body.

Many women undergo hormone replacement therapy (HRT) after the menopause. This is to replace the oestrogen that their body subsequently lacks with something that will slow down the symptoms of aging (including osteoporosis).

However, women should be made aware of exactly what they are putting into their bodies. Typically, HRT drugs have progestogen in them. (This is a synthetic version of the female hormone progesterone).

And the shocking truth is that progestogen is made from … testosterone!

That's right, whilst thousands of women use HRT drugs to substitute their oestrogen deficiency, they are in fact replacing it with a derivative of a male sex hormone. The symptoms of which can also cause female hair loss! (And all this from a treatment that is meant to prevent suffering!)

And, what's even more shocking is that this hair loss side-effect of HRT has been known since 1960!

5. An Aging Population

People today are living much longer than ever before. In 1860, the average life expectancy of a British woman was 40. By the 1990's this had risen to 80. Statistically, this means that the percentage of older people is increasing (when compared to the younger population).

In consequence of this increase in longevity, the previous four reasons will, quite simply, apply to more people.

However, women generally live longer than men. So, not only is there an increasing number of elderly people, but the majority of these will be women.

And, given that older women are less likely to maintain proper hormone balance (as explained earlier) this will cause female hair loss numbers to increase.

Hair loss due to the aging process is not a medical condition. Instead, it is simply a reflection of the inability an older body has to grow hair as well as it used to.

What Links All Five Factors?

Can you see a common theme linking all these reasons for the rise in female hair loss?

Hormone disruption!

These five reasons can cause female hair loss from an existing problem to get worse by making any hormone imbalance you have more severe.

However, none of them can be considered as the underlying cause of hair loss in women.

It's important to understand the exact mechanism taking place that will cause female hair loss because, once you understand a problem, you can set about finding a solution. In the case of hair loss by androgenetic alopecia, you should research skull expansion - see below.

Natural Remedies For Thinning Hair

Some herbal remedies for hair loss can help to some extent (usually by reducing production of DHT - the hormone linked to androgenetic alopecia).

However, a new hands-on way to treat the underlying mechanism of this condition (skull expansion) is now available. This safe, natural remedy promises to reverse alopecia, hair loss and hair thinning in women as well as men.
