Hair Replacement Systems -
Baldness Treatment For You?

Hundreds of baldness treatments exist. Is a hair replacement system the answer you're looking for?

This page tells you everything you need to know about hair replacement systems - what they are, what they involve, and what they cost.

Some companies have been in business for over 25 years researching and perfecting the hair replacement procedures that you see today. As a result, these increasingly sophisticated techniques have now largely reduced the stigma that has always surrounded replacement hair methods.

This is how it works:

The bald area of your scalp is first measured, and a skin-like membrane made to fit. Typically, this "second layer of skin" is made from very thin polyurethane, which allows your real scalp to show through - this produces a natural appearance to the crown and parting. The membrane used is also porous, and so allows your real skin to breath and stay clean.

(Ready-made versions of these membranes are cheaper, but these standard size bases might not fit precisely).

Your remaining hair at the back and sides of your head is then cut to stubble length (2mm) and the membrane fused to this existing hair. A translucent, hypoallergenic medical adhesive that's resilient to sweat and water is used.

The system is tailor-made to match your original hair colour, density, parting, etc - the membrane has donor hair injected or knotted into it strand by strand, and can take up to 8 weeks to produce. The success of this process is obviously reliant upon the skill of the baldness treatment specialists involved.

Donor hair is originally 6 to 8 inches long, and typically purchased from Eastern Europe. In countries such as Russia, chemical hair treatment is uncommon, which makes their "untouched" hair perfect for this technique. Before treatment begins you choose the hairstyle you prefer from a brochure, and the donor hair will be styled in this way later on.

Synthetic hair is a cheaper alternative to real hair. However, it can burn or melt if subjected to curling irons, etc. They and is susceptible to mat together in hot water or detergents. (A mix of both human and synthetic hair is often a good compromise of cost and quality.

Clients of hair replacement methods like this are typically between the ages of 22 and 30.

Advantages of hair replacement systems

  • The benefits of baldness treatment like this over wigs and toupees is that the new hair withstands tough treatment - a force strong enough to pull out real hair would be needed to yank it out. Also, wigs give a feeling much like wearing a hat, in that it's not actually part of you - at the end of the day, a wig will sit on a wig stand until you need to use it again. Baldness treatment using A hair replacement system offers a superior, semi-permanent solution compared to wigs and toupees.
  • You can also continue to play sports, swim, etc with this form of baldness treament.
  • The procedure involves no surgery or scarring, and is pain-free. As such, it's a viable alternative worth consideration by anyone who may be thinking about hair transplants. It's also much less expensive than the more permanent solution offered by hair transplants.

Disadvantages of hair replacement systems

  • The costs of hair replacement systems varies. Depending on upon how quickly you want this process completed, this type of baldness treatment could be done in a single session. Other clients prefer a more gradual process over perhaps 6 months or a year, in which case up to 5 sessions may be needed. A single session procedure will cost about US$7400 (approximately £4000) and, should 5 sessions be involved, this cost rises to around US$11,000 (£6000).

Other hair replacement systems may cost hundreds rather than thousands (including a polyurethane membrane base and real human hair).

  • Apart from the initial cost, there are additional costs too - you'll need to return to the studio every 4 to 6 weeks for servicing. This involves removal of the membrane, a very short haircut, and then glueing the membrane back onto the stubble that remains.
  • The hair you get obviously does not grow, and so you have to keep the hairstyle you initially selected.
  • Baldness treatment of this type will not give you a full head of hair that lasts for life. Hair replacement systems could have a lifespan that's no more than a year - further baldness treatment will be required with new templates made to take account of any further hair loss. And, should you opt for less frequent replacement, your hair may become obvious due to discolouration, weathering and shedding.
  • When you're considering baldness treatment, you need to know everything that's involved in order to get an accurate cost comparison. You will also be wise to look at a simple alternative rather than a far more expensive option that might not even produce the result you seek.
