Avodart And Dutasteride
Are The Same Thing,
But Will It Work For You?

Avodart is the brand name for dutasteride (sometimes called duasteride in error).

This drug will inhibit the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and is normally used in the treatment of an enlarged prostate gland in men. Since DHT is also intrinsic to the genetic hair loss process, blocking its formation can be an effective way to prevent male pattern baldness too.

Blocking DHT production is the same reason why finasteride (Propecia and Proscar) works. The enzyme 5 alpha reductase types I and II are resposible for converting testosterone into DHT, and dutasteride will inhibit both types.

Finasteride will only block 5 alpha reductase type II.

5 alpha reductase type I may be responsible for about 20% of the conversion of testosterone into DHT, and so dutasteride should give better results than finasteride.

There’s no clear evidence that blocking both types is better, but dutasteride will reduce DHT levels in your blood stream more effectively than finasteride (90% vs 75%).

Does it really work?

Yes - it can significantly reduce or delay hair loss.

A dose of 2.5 mg Dutasteride per day will block close to 100% of DHT. This compares favourably with 5mg daily dosage of Propecia (finasteride) which suppresses only 70% of DHT. This makes Dutasteride about 30% more effective than Propecia in promoting hair regrowth.

You have to take Avodart regularly for 3 to 6 weeks before it shows full effect. Results will vary from person to person, but it’s unlikely that you’ll grow back all the hair you’ve lost.

Dutasteride is the active ingredient.

How much do you use?

Dutasteride is very effective at small doses - a daily dose of 0.5mg (one capsule) will inhibit DHT by nearly 90%.

For men and women?

No - It's for men only.

Any side effects?

Yes – These are the most frequent Avodart side effects –

Impotence.
Decrease in libido (sex drive).
Breast enlargement and tenderness.
Decrease in the amount of semen produced.

There are also other concerns when using this product -

Dutasteride should not be used with any other DHT inhibitors such as Propecia. You should wait for 3 days after stopping Propecia before starting Avodart.

Avodart stays in your system much longer than Propecia does - Propecia has a half-life of 6 to 8 hours, the Avodart half-life is 5 weeks.

Women and children should not take this hair loss drug. Women who are or could become pregnant should not handle dutasteride (there’s a risk of abnormal sex organ development in male babies). This medicine may be absorbed through the skin.

Men taking it must not donate blood for at least 6 months after their last dose to prevent pregnant women from receiving dutasteride through a blood donation.

Avodart/dutasteride has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of prostate enlargement but not for hair loss. Consult with your doctor before taking dutasteride, and always read the label.
